Jigsaw Linocut Printmaking
A colourful one-day workshop to brighten up January
Date:
Saturday 30 January 2027
Time:
10am–4pm
Beat the January blues with a day of creative, colourful printmaking.
January can feel like a long, grey month. So why not put the cold and dark outside for a while and spend a whole day making something bright, colourful and completely your own?
In this relaxed, hands-on workshop, you’ll discover the playful process of jigsaw linocut to create a vibrant multi-coloured print.
It’s a wonderfully absorbing process and a lovely way to start the year: away from screens, out of your head and into the satisfying rhythm of drawing, carving, inking and printing.
Suitable for complete beginners and those with some printmaking experience.
A LITTLE COLOUR FOR A GREY JANUARY
We’ll spend the day experimenting with bold shapes, cheerful colour combinations and simple patterns to create a print that brings a little brightness to the middle of winter.
You don’t need to be an accomplished artist or have a perfect idea before you arrive. I’ll show you how to simplify your ideas into shapes that work beautifully as a jigsaw linocut.
And if January has left you feeling creatively flat, that’s absolutely fine too.
Sometimes the best way to get inspired is simply to start making.
WHAT IS JIGSAW LINOCUT?
Jigsaw linocut is a playful printmaking technique, think of it a bit like a creative puzzle.
Each piece is inked in a different colour before being carefully brought back together to create one image.
This means you can create multi-coloured prints from a single block and experiment with endless combinations of colour and pattern.
You’ll learn how the pieces work together, how to plan your design and how to print it successfully.
FROM SKETCH TO COLOURFUL PRINT
Throughout the day, I’ll guide you through the process step by step.
We’ll explore:
- Developing an image suitable for jigsaw linocut
- Simplifying your idea into bold, printable shapes
- Planning an exciting colour palette
- Transferring your design onto lino
- Cutting and carving your lino safely and confidently
- Separating your block into individual pieces
- Mixing and experimenting with colour
- Inking techniques
- Registering and printing your design
- Creating a small edition of colourful prints
You’ll have the opportunity to print both by hand and with a press, so you’ll understand different ways to continue your printmaking at home.
A WHOLE DAY OF COLOUR & CREATIVITY
This workshop is about more than learning a new printmaking technique.
It’s a chance to give yourself a proper day away from the everyday.
No January resolutions. No screens. No pressure to be productive.
Just time to draw, carve, experiment, make mistakes, change your mind and see what happens.
I’ll demonstrate each stage and be on hand throughout the day with friendly guidance and individual support.
There’ll be plenty of time for conversation and laughter, as well as those lovely quiet moments when you become completely absorbed in what you’re making.
TAKE HOME SOME JANUARY SUNSHINE
By the end of the day, you’ll have created your own colourful jigsaw linocut, along with experimental prints and your original lino pieces.
You’ll also have the knowledge and confidence to continue making colourful prints at home.
Your finished print could brighten up a wall, become a thoughtful gift, or simply be a little reminder of a day when you chose to do something creative for yourself.
