Ex Libris - Linocut Bookplates & Bookmarks
A creative introduction to designing, carving and hand-printing your own bookplates and bookmarks.
Saturday 10th October 2026, 10am - 3pm
Suitable for complete beginners and those with some experience.
Do you love books, beautiful paper and making things by hand?
In this relaxed, hands-on workshop, I’ll introduce you to the basics of linocut printmaking
and help you create your own personalised bookplates and bookmarks - small, beautiful prints to keep, gift or tuck inside your favourite books!
You don’t need to be confident at drawing. Your designs can be inspired by books and words, nature, patterns, symbols or simple decorative shapes. I’ll help you turn your ideas into bold, printable designs before showing you how to transfer, carve and print them.
A little gift with a secret
Looking for a Christmas present that feels personal and a little unexpected?
A handmade bookplate or bookmark can make a lovely hidden gift inside a favourite book- a small surprise that can be discovered and treasured long after Christmas.
Or, instead of giving the finished print, gift someone a place on the workshop. They can come along in the New Year and create their own personalised bookplate and bookmarks for a book they love.
It’s a thoughtful gift for book lovers, creative friends, family members or anyone who would enjoy taking a little time out to make something by hand.
Learn to linocut
I’ll introduce you to the essential tools and techniques of relief printmaking, including:
- Developing a simple design that works well as a linocut
- Transferring your image onto lino
- Safe and effective cutting and carving techniques
- Creating bold shapes, lettering, borders and decorative marks
- Inking and hand-printing your lino
- Getting the best results without a printing press
You’ll print both using the Albion press and by hand, making the process accessible and easy to continue at home.
Create something personal
Bookplates have a long history as beautifully printed labels marking the ownership of treasured books. Bookmarks offer another space for creative expression - something useful that can also be a tiny work of art.
You’ll create one-colour linocut designs
that reflect your own interests and style.
Perhaps a nature-inspired pattern, a favourite word or phrase, an illustration connected to a beloved book, or a simple personal symbol.
There’s plenty of scope to experiment and make the designs your own.
A friendly introduction to printmaking
Whether you’re completely new to linocut or have tried it before, I’ll guide you through each stage at a comfortable pace.
There will be demonstrations, practical guidance and plenty of opportunity to ask questions and experiment with your tools.
The focus is on enjoying the process, learning useful skills and discovering just how much you can create with a small piece of lino, some ink and a little imagination.
What you’ll take home
At the end of the workshop, you’ll have:
- A set of original linocut bookplates and bookmarks
- Your original lino block
- New carving and printing skills
- The confidence to continue making prints at home
- Ideas and inspiration for future linocut projects
What to bring
Please bring:
- A few ideas or reference images for your design
- A small sketchbook
- A folder or portfolio to carry your prints home safely
- A favourite book or existing bookplate for inspiration, if you have one
All other materials are provided.
Give a little creativity this Christmas
A workshop voucher makes a lovely Christmas gift for someone who would enjoy doing something different in the New Year.
Instead of another thing to unwrap, give them a day to make, learn and create something they’ll keep, and the chance to make a personalised bookplate for a book they truly love.
Or keep the workshop for yourself and make something special for someone else.
A book. A little surprise inside. A handmade print. A gift with a story.
Come and make something for your books!
Spend a creative day learning the satisfying process of linocut, from first sketch to carved block to hand-printed paper.
No previous experience needed. Just bring your ideas and a love of books.
