Winter Wildlife Linocut Printmaking

A one-day workshop exploring wildlife, winter landscapes and the art of linocut

Date: Saturday 23 January 2027
Time: 10am - 5pm

Spend a winter’s day getting creative with lino, ink and the wildlife that surrounds us.

In this relaxed, hands-on workshop, you’ll learn the fundamentals of linocut printmaking while creating your own winter wildlife print. We’ll look at the shapes, textures and character of familiar birds and animals, exploring how to translate them into a bold and expressive one-colour print.

Suitable for complete beginners and those with some printmaking experience, this is a chance to slow down, learn something new and spend a whole day absorbed in making.

INSPIRED BY WINTER WILDLIFE

Winter offers a wonderful subject for printmaking.

Bare branches, seed heads, tracks in the snow, garden birds, foxes, hares and other familiar wildlife all provide inspiration for simple, striking images.

You don’t need to be an accomplished artist. I’ll show you how to simplify your chosen subject into shapes, lines and textures that translate well into lino.

From sketch to print

Throughout the day, I’ll guide you through the complete process of creating a linocut.

We’ll explore:

  • Finding and developing an inspiring wildlife image
  • Simplifying photographs and drawings into a printable design
  • Transferring your image onto lino
  • Using linocutting tools safely and confidently
  • Creating different textures and marks
  • Understanding positive and negative space
  • Inking your lino block
  • Printing your finished design
  • Making a small edition of prints

You’ll be printing both by hand and with a press, making sure you can continue at home.

A WHOLE DAY TO MAKE

There’s something lovely about having a whole day dedicated to one creative process.

Rather than rushing through a quick project, we’ll have time to experiment, make mistakes, change direction and see what happens.

I’ll demonstrate each stage and be available throughout the day to offer individual guidance and help you develop your own ideas.

The atmosphere will be friendly and relaxed, with plenty of time for conversation, concentration and the satisfying rhythm of carving and printing.

Your winter wildlife print

By the end of the day, you’ll have created your own wildlife linocut, along with additional experimental prints and your original lino block.

You’ll also leave with the confidence and practical knowledge to keep making linocuts at home.

Perhaps your print will become a piece of artwork for your wall, a gift for a wildlife-loving friend, or the beginning of a whole series of seasonal prints.

What to bring

Please bring:

  • A small sketchbook
  • A few wildlife ideas or reference images (ideally your own)
  • Any photographs you’d like to work from

All other materials are provided.
